1L Essay Contest

The Liberty & Law Center at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School and the Federalist Society invite you to write an up to 2000-word essay on the topic: How to promote a culture of open debate and tolerance for ideological diversity at universities in general, or at law schools specifically.

This competition was open to first-year students (1Ls) nationwide enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school as a J.D. candidate. The first-place prize is $2000 and the essay was posted on the Federalist Society website and the Liberty & Law Center website with the potential for additional publication. There are also $500 prizes for two runners-up (with the first-place prize, the “Prizes”). The essays are being reviewed anonymously by a panel of legal academics and professionals. The deadline for submissions was February 18th, 2019, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
